Re: Tell me the truth

* * *

Beanie sighed. Rubbed his eyes. He re-read the emails again. I need answers. I need to know what happened. Obviously, the person behind the coolkids email address believed Eric could provide the answers. But about what? Beanie focused on the word “need.” It suggested an urgency. Maybe desperation. A need was something essential. Something critical for survival. Shuffling through the emails again, Beanie scanned the subject lines. An idea came to him. He wondered what might happen if he sent a response email.

“Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!”

The high-pitched whooping and yelling reached Beanie before Ethan came barreling into the study, arms windmilling as he spun around like a whirling dervish.

“What are you doing, Daddy?” demanded Ethan, hopping around the study.

Putting the emails away before Ethan grabbed them, Beanie said, “Daddy was just looking at some documents for work.”

“What kind of documents?” asked Ethan, skipping in a circle.

“Just something for a story Daddy is working on,” said Beanie.

Seconds later, little Evan toddled into the room, laughing, and clapping his hands. “Daddy! Daddy!”

“Hey, Bud,” said Beanie, bending over to scoop Evan into his arms and onto his lap.

“I want to see the documents, Daddy,” said Ethan, his face an expression of earnest interest.

“I already put them away,” said Beanie. “Why don’t we go outside before Mommy comes home?”

“But I want to see the documents,” said Ethan, his tone hinting at a major tantrum if he didn’t get his way.

“Documents!” echoed Evan. “Want to see documents!”

“Are the documents a secret, Daddy?” asked Ethan, a mischievous gleam in his eye.

Beanie considered the question. “More like a mystery.”

“A mystery!” Ethan jumped up and down. “Like the Hardy Boys, Daddy?”

“Yeah, sort of like the Hardy Boys,” said Beanie.

“Hardy Boy!” Evan giggled. “Hardy Boy!”

Recently, Ethan had found an old Hardy Boys mystery novel in the book swap box at the library. The books were above his reading level but Ethan had been drawn to the cover, with its hand-drawn adventure scene of Frank and Joe running from a speeding car. Beanie had been reading a chapter to Ethan and Evan every night for the past two weeks.

“Can I solve the mystery, Daddy?” begged Ethan. “Please! Please!”

“Solve the mystery!” said Evan, squirming on Beanie’s lap, a clear signal that he wanted to be allowed to roam free around the study. “Solve the mystery!”

“I can figure out who the bad guys are, Daddy!” promised Ethan. “We can put them in jail where they belong!”

Chuckling, Beanie ruffled the short curls of Ethan’s fauxhawk. “Let’s go out in the backyard, okay? We can come up with a plan to catch the bad guys.”

“What about the documents?”

Beanie wasn’t surprised by the question. Ethan could be like a dog with a bone sometimes.

“We’ll look at them later,” said Beanie, securing his hold on Evan as he stood and took Ethan’s hand.

“Okay, Daddy,” said Ethan. “Are the documents hidden in a secret place? We don’t want the bad guys to find them.”

“They won’t,” said Beanie, heading out of the study.
